Department of Art & Design Mission Statement
To complement the mission of the University, the Department of Art & Design dedicates its efforts toward the following mission: The WKU Department of Art & Design offers paths to explore, experience, and expand the possibilities of artistic expression, an indispensable part of human society. It seeks to accomplish this mission through creativity, research, and effective use of its multiple resources.
The Department of Art & Design offers three undergraduate degree programs: the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts with concentrations in Studio, Graphic Design, Animation, and UX Design; the Bachelor of Arts in Visual Studies with either a concentration in Art Education or a Studio concentration and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History. In addition, the department offers undergraduate minors in Art History, Computer Animation, Graphic Design, and Studio Art; and Certificates in Graphic Design, Game Design, and User Experience. WKU is a NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) accredited institution.

Through the University Gallery, the department presents exhibitions, lectures, and workshops by nationally recognized artists designed to enhance the education of art & design students while serving the entire university and larger community. Juried student shows, and graduating senior exhibitions are scheduled annually.

This course gives students an overview of the multi-step process of computer animation from start to finish. Students will create basic animated clips using industry-standard 3D applications.

ANIM 220 3D Modeling I: Environment 3 Hours
This course introduces students to the process of creating 3D content needed for animated projects in a variety of applications, including game development, animation for film, and fine art. The course focuses on modeling objects and environments.

ANIM 330 Sound and Image 3 Hours
Sound greatly enhances visual experience, and sound working in tandem with image is one of the most profound ways to convey ideas. Students will experiment with creating abstract digital sound, emphasizing the integration of visual elements with sound, exploring these as ingredients of communication and art practice for screen- and time-based art, installation art, game design, and animation.

A hands-on multimedia strategy and content creation course for creatives. Applies the synthesis of brands’ value proposition and persuasion techniques to create effective messaging and visual strategies in design assets. Explores and applies various techniques to adapt content for use in print, digital, and social communications platforms. Explores advanced methods of scripting, the use of forms, and the implementation of embedded media (audio, video and animation). The course includes discussion of strategic design, navigation, digital ergonomics, information architecture, way finding, semiotics, symbolism and electronic publishing, and provides a foundation for the creation of web-based multi-media projects.

UX 430 Advanced User Interface Design 3 Hours
Advanced level course that combines previously acquired UX/UI skills with new strategies for designing, building, implementing, and evaluating interactive digital interfaces with a human-centered approach by applying best practices and design principles of user interface design. Students will use the human-centered design process to understand users and design digital tools that are both intuitive and technically sound. This course places a strong focus on research, individualized and collaborative self-directed projects, and experiential learning through hands-on, projects-based instruction.
